BRGR Project and Sancho at Maginhawa St.
Finally got to spend time with MJ and Jordz again, after Charles suggested we invite them today.
Yayyy for finally getting to try BRGR Project. We came in at around 1PM to sort of avoid the lunch crowd. Luckily, there was a parking space. It was full inside though, so we had to eat al fresco, which was actually
quite…really hot. Wrong move.I had fun making my own burger, and the price was student-friendly enough I was able to treat Charles for a change :) I had beef patty+mozzarella+caramelized onions+special BRGR sauce+BLT on mine. It was okay: not extraordinarily good, not bad either. The patty was moist, though a bit too soft for my liking. Also, I think getting Gruyere cheese instead would’ve worked better for my burger. We also ordered french fries and sweet potato fries. I enjoyed the sweet potato fries a lot.
After our burgers, I took Anton Diaz’ (of Our Awesome Planet) advice to try the churros from Sancho, just beside BRGR Project. I was glad we did, even if I was quite full from the burger. The churros really were like Dulcinea’s! And for only 80 bucks, it was a great way to end our lunch :)
sidenote: Sancho’s menu items and surprisingly affordable price (150 bucks would already get you a good lunch) actually caught my attention. I’m definitely coming back there to try their entrees!

April 12, 2012: Breakfast Date at Cafe 1771
Their claim is that they’re “The Best Breakfast Place”, at least in the Ortigas area. Surely, they did not dissapoint :)Surprisingly, I was able to drag Charles out to have breakfast with me today. Maybe it was that we haven’t seen each other in over a week that made him agree to waking up so early. Haha. We were thinking of a place to have a good breakfast at, and I suggested going to the Ortigas area. He’s eaten here before, so he quickly suggested we eat here.
He ordered the beef tapa, and I ordered the pancakes. They were heavenly: just the right amount of fluffy and melt in your mouth. It was topped with caramelized bananas and candied walnuts, which really gave a nice sweetness to it.
We split the Eggs Florentine (poached egg and creamed spinach on puff pastry w/ smoked salmon—you can choose to have ham—and hollandaise sauce). Again, amazing. The eggs were perfectly poached and the smoked salmon went well with everything else.
I’m a big breakfast person since I like waking up early, so this was definitely a great foodie experience for me. I’m definitely coming back!
(note: They also serve Lunch and Dinner. Check out their website here [click])

Food from my Bicol trip: Laing (Taro Leaves in Coconut Milk)
Probably one of my favorite Bicol dishes, I ate so much laing during our stay. Locally, it’s called pinangat which, if I remember correctly, translates to tied, pertaining to how it’s tied with banana leaves while being cooked. The leaves melt in your mouth, especially if young taro leaves were used.
I like my laing super spicy! I just have to eat it with a LOT of rice :)

Food from my Bicol Trip: Fern Salad and Prawns
We also had a Salad and some (huuuuge) Prawns for lunch. They were as big as my face! :O And really juicy too!
The salad was different, so I enjoyed it a lot. Instead of lettuce, we had locally-grown ferns (forgot which kind though) as the leaves for the salad. We had it with hard boiled egg, onions and a vinegar-sugar dressing.

Food from my Bicol trip: Suman for Breakfast
Had this suman (sticky rice wrapped and cooked in banana leaves), which unfortunately I couldn’t remember what it’s locally called, for breakfast. Apparently, you eat it with tsokolateng batirol (a thick hot chocolate) poured on top.
Also, it substitutes for the normal white rice. We ate it with scrambled eggs and daing (dried fish):

I of course enjoyed the twist to the usual Filipino breakfast. :)

April 9, 2012: Bread Shoot
Okay, so I didn’t exactly eat this, but we had a photo shoot of some bread for our store. It was tough since I had to improvise. Good thing our porch had white walls, and was well-lit at noontime (yes, I shot at 12nn and it was SO HOT). I think it turned out well.
p.s. I know I still owe you guys the food shots from our Bicol trip. haha!

Just got back from an awesome trip to Bicol!
Of course, what would a vacation be without getting to taste some of the local delicacies, right? I have a ton of photos of food to upload. I’m just going to start with this one, which is a pipino (cucumber)salad of sorts. I’m not sure if it’s a local thing, but with the host family we stayed with, it’s eaten as a palate cleanser. I also found it effective in relieving my tongue from all the spicy food (read: Bicol Express and Laing!)
I’ll be uploading the other food photos soon :)
